My German ancestry is thru two basic families the Schlegels(Slagles)
and Stines(Stein or Stone).
The Slagle family descends from the immigrant, Christoph Friedrich Schlegel, who was born October 24 1676
and died about 1772. He left Saxony for America
between 1697 and 1700 first settling in
Pennsylvania. It is speculated he
was associated with Pietism, a revivalist movement in the
and that he came to North America for religious
freedom. Some genealogists suspect Christoph
was even a member of the secret Rosicrucian Order.
He later moved from Germantown,
southward to the Susquehanna
Valley. He is believed to
have built the first water mill within the Susquehanna watershed.
If a genealogist were to follow his movements and land
purchases in his lifetime, they would find he was quite wealthy. The inventory
of his estate is said to be one of the seventh largest in the colonial period.
On May 6 1746, He married Ann Maria “Mary” Eyster, daughter
of the German Immigrant, Johann Jaqcob Eyster. Mary and
Christoph had eight Children; Hanna, Daniel, Jacob,
Henry, Catherana, Mary Magdalena, and
It is from his son Jacob I descend by Mary Barbara his
Jacob Schlegel was born June 10 1723 in
PA, and died before April 9 1790 in Berwick
Twp., York, Pa. He married Mary Catherine Klee May 6 1746
in Hanover, York, Pa. She was the daughter of Johann Nicholas
Klee and Catherine whose last name is unknown. They were the parents of 12
children. She was born February 26 1729 in Germany,
and died March 18 1775 in Lancaster Co.,
He married Mary Barbara (last name unknown) on June 25 1776. Jacob fathered and
additional 7 children by Mary Barbara before his death in 1790. Mary Barbara
married Jacob Stine and apparently moved to Frederick

vii. Eve SLAGLE was born 5 Oct 1788. She married Lewis STINE.
The ancestry of my Great Great Grandfather Lewis Stine is
unknown but the following facts would lead to the conclusion that he may have
well been related to the Jacob Stine who married the widow Mary Barbara Slagle,
possibly a son from a previous marriage.
Lewis married the youngest daughter of Jacob Slagle and Mary Barbara.
Per land records, Jacob Stine and Mary Barbara moved to Frederick County
Lewis Stine and Eve Slagle, whose first name was likely Anna or Ann as later
census data would indicate, married in 1810 in Frederick County
